NFPA 1962 is the standard that makes sure it will. It sets how hose is inspected, cared for, and — at least once a year — service tested to prove it can still take the pressure it will see on the fireground. Why Hose Gets Tested

A hose that fails at a fire can cut a crew's water at the exact moment they cannot afford it, and a burst length under pressure is a genuine injury hazard. Service testing finds the weak jacket, the slipping coupling, and the age-hardened liner in the yard — on a controlled test lay — instead of at 2 a.m. on a working fire. It is also a documentation requirement: a department that cannot show its hose was tested has a liability problem as much as a safety one.

The correct pressure is the service test pressure marked on the hose. When hose carries no marking, NFPA 1962 sets minimums by type:
