Reaction force is the rearward push the line exerts on the nozzle team. A common guideline is ~60 lbf maximum for a single firefighter and ~75 lbf for a two-person handline crew, though department SOPs vary.

How nozzle reaction is calculated

Smooth bore and fog nozzles use different formulas. For a smooth bore nozzle, reaction depends on the tip diameter and nozzle pressure:

NR = 1.57 × d² × NP

d is the tip diameter in inches and NP is nozzle pressure in psi. For a fog / combination nozzle, reaction is based on flow and pressure:

NR = 0.0505 × Q × √NP

Q is flow in gpm. Both give the reaction force in pounds-force (lbf).

Handline tips are typically flowed at 50 psi nozzle pressure; master-stream tips at 80 psi.

Worked example

A 1″ smooth bore handline tip at 50 psi nozzle pressure:

NR = 1.57 × 1.0² × 50
   = 1.57 × 1 × 50 = 79 lbf

A fog nozzle flowing 150 gpm at 100 psi:

NR = 0.0505 × 150 × √100
   = 0.0505 × 150 × 10 = 76 lbf

What is nozzle reaction?
The rearward force a flowing nozzle exerts on the firefighters holding the line. Newton's third law: water pushed forward pushes the line back. Too much reaction makes a line uncontrollable.

Worked Example

Fog nozzle, 150 GPM at 100 PSI: NR = 0.0505 × Q × √NP = 0.0505 × 150 × 10 ≈ 76 lbf.

Smooth bore, 15/16" tip at 50 PSI: NR = 1.57 × d² × NP = 1.57 × 0.879 × 50 ≈ 69 lbf — while flowing a comparable 185 GPM.

Similar water, noticeably different fight: the smooth bore's lower operating pressure is why high-flow handlines usually wear a smooth bore tip. The practical ceiling for one firefighter on a line is roughly 60–70 lbf of sustained reaction; two firefighters, about double.
